Let’s talk about copaiba. I am a huge fan of the stuff, if I had to pick one oil to be stranded on a desert island with, copaiba would be my top pick. I once had facial dermatitis that I tried to get rid of for over a year, costing me hundreds of dollars in products that claimed to be the cure, and tons of heartache. One week of copaiba and it was gone, saving my skin and my sanity. I call it the wonder oil because it has so many uses and can help your body in so many areas. Copaiba is unique because of the role it plays on our endocannabinoid system.

The Origins of Copaiba

Copaiba comes from the resin of the copaiba tree, which is found sometimes towering at over 100 feet in tropical South America. Since the 16th century, natives of Brazil have used this oil in traditional health practices. It has a sweet, woody aroma. Copaiba contains beta-caryophyllene, BCP for short. This is a sesquiterpene compound, which has the ability to get rid of faulty information in cellular memory that can cause disease, possesses the ability to cross the blood brain barrier, playing a vital biochemical function in both plants and humans.  This is the component that works with our endocannabinoid system.

Endocannabinoids

The purpose of the endocannabinoid system is regulating a range of functions in the body such as sleep, appetite, mood, memory, inflammation and immune system responses, chronic pain, skin and nerve function, cardiovascular system function, reproduction and fertility. These functions all contribute to homeostasis, which is the stability of your internal environment. We have cannabinoid receptors throughout our body, in our glands, tissues, organs, immune cells and brain. Endocannabinoids bind to these receptors to signal that the ECS needs to take action within the body. There are two main EC receptors, CB1 & CB2.

   – CB1 receptors are found mostly in the central nervous system, connective tissues, glands and organs.

   – CB2 resides in the immune system and structures

Endocannabinoids can target either receptor. The EC responsible for helping our body is the BCP in copaiba. BCP interacts directly with CB2 receptors, which are the ones responsible for improving immunity, reducing inflammation and relieving certain types of pain.
